EDDIE LONG SAGA – WHAT ABOUT THE VICTIMS?

By Terry Loving

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!

…………………..

Concerning this Eddie Long/Creflo Dollar saga, there is one thing that screams volumes – and very few are catching it. There is much said concerning false prophets, pedophiles, spiritual immorality and more – and yet – not much attention is flowing towards the four young men – groomed from boyhood – deceived by “Daddy Long” – sexually abused, and damaged for life. Why is that? Like many others, I expressed my disdain for both Long and Dollar, but now, I want to dedicate this post to the forgotten.

…………………………………………….

There are numerous Christians who will go to war to defend these two “anointed men of God.” Cough, cough – excuse me, almost got chocked there. The spiritual spotlight should shine brightly upon these charlatans, but the Balm of Gilead must be applied to the wounded. Too many have suffered church and pastor abuse, and they are quickly forgotten as if the sins were theirs and theirs alone. In the movie, BLISS – a young girl was raped, and her family decided to kill her because she didn’t name her rapist. Her fear was founded, for it was a family member that raped her. Nonetheless, the rape was labeled as “her sin.” Her family and the whole village turned against her – she became an outcast. Why when a woman is raped, the crime has to be “her sin?” Why are those who are victimized raped again by public and familial opinions? I just don’t get that.

…………………………………………….

Reading the statements in defense of Long and Creflo made me shudder. How could any rational, intelligent child of God defend these two? I find the lack of empathy for the four young men betrayed by Eddie Long – among others – horrendous. Let’s check out some of these “un-altered”comments concerning Eddie Long and his crony:

“That’s why i said “if he did commit the error” we have no reason to prove he did, but just in case he did, there’s no sin God can’t forgive.”

“To all that are criticizing this man with these religious web names remember what the bible says. He that is without sin let him cast the first stone. Bishop Eddie Long has not been convicted yet. Where is the love and the Heart of God. We as believers are so fast to judge instead of praying first to hear what God has to say. No i don’t condone sin especially when it is a leader, but remember we are flesh and blood and we all need deliverance from something. There is always room to grow. So people of the most high God pray, pray, and pray hard this could be you or someone close that you know and look up to. Pray 4 his members and his family instead of judging”

…………………………………………….

“There’s no sin God can’t forgive.”

“Good Biblical teaching with a firm hand” is what created this mess, and continues to destroy lives.”

“We have to wait to confirm if he did it. And if he did, there is room, for repentance. Isn’t it?”

“innocent til proven guilty.  He without sin. Any kind of sin. Pray for him.”

“I am praying for Long because either way “when you see your brother at fault, go restore such a one and pray for him.”

“The bible says you will know my people by their fruits. I have known Eddie for years since 1995. He is an amazing human being.  He has done more for this community then any other single person I can name. The people he helps on a daily basis is amazing. Unless you know this man stop talking and sit back and watch God at work. Eddie must go through this trial just like Job; and just like Job he will come out bigger and better than before. This process is weeding out the true and the fakes.”

…………………………………………….

“Do you have any proof he did it?”

“Does it matter what he says? He only owes God and the courts an explanation. As far as I know he has yet to be convicted and in this country “we are presumed innocent ……not guilty until all facts are in. Besides my Bible says “let he who is without sin cast the first stone!” If you were accused I am certain you would like the same courtesy!”

“The preacher in the city here, he still gon’ go to Heaven. He’s cleansed; he’s alright. And if you from that church that you know I’m talking about and you trying to join here, I don’t want you to join here. You need to go and join where you ‘spose to be.” (Creflo)

“PLEASE BE CAREFUL PUTTING YOUR MOUTH ON PASTOR’S OR GOD’S ANOINTED… NONE OF US ARE QUALIFIED TO JUSGE (Judge) – ANY MAN WALKING THIS EARTH…”

…………………………………………….

“I Think that he may have tried to show these young men a different side other than poverty and they turned it on him. Even if what they said is true there is a bigger picture that people are missing. There is a better way to get to the truth other than putting it out like they did, this world is already lacking faith and the people that are young in their faith my have lost it and now these young men will be held responsible for the souls lost because of this. Question, hat ever happened to innoccent til proven guilty!!!”

…………………………………………….

“Its is wrong to condemn and judge him (Bishop) but he should admit his guilt and let the congregration pray for him and embrace him once again as their leader.”

“Those young men better realize what they are doing; first of all they will go to jail for false accusations if they are lying for whatever the reason and then the Bible say’s “touch not my annointed and do my prophet know harm!” So all stand to be punished in some way if they have deceived the other in any way…”

…………………………………………….

“I understand what Dr.Dollar is doing.Any mature Christian also knows, he has scripture to back him up. The man is staying in the love of God walking in love, love covers a multtitude of sins and staying out of judgement.Judgement is darkness and what he is telling those people if they are leaving out of offense and strife he does not want that mess in his church. If the Lord has told them to leave Bishop Longs church then fine, but the man is keeping himself in the light LOVE.He is doing exactly what Jesus would do and say, Let him who has not sin cast the first stone. That woman looked up and there was no one standing there but she and Jesus.Deal with your sin leave Bishop Long and Dr.Dollar to God be wise to do so.”

“I couldn’t tell you if he is, or if he isn’t, but what I can say is we all believe what we want to believe whether it’s innocent or guilty, God in “His own wisdom will reveal in His timing”. Until God says, I’m believing my pastor- who said he didn’t do this.”

“I feel its between Him and God….If those four guys took the money and ran so be it, God knows!!! How far do they think will get…….”

…………………………………………….

THESE TWO I LIKED THE MOST

“Ultimately, however, I am not so very much concerned with what started the mess–sexuality–or what will fix the mess–good biblical teaching or whatever–but that an abuser is allowed a position of authority of a group of people to continue preying on them. It’s like sending a battered wife back to her husband. Just wrong on every level.”

“I find it funny that people are treating him as though he is the pitiable party. What about the children? If it is true, how many more are out there, afraid to speak up because of people like you? You know, those who won’t believe them. Those who try to put this shield of protection over a grown man, while children remain vulnerable. That is why sexual abuse victims rarely speak out. They become the attacked, yet again.”

…………………………………………….

It is my sincere hope that the four victims will use some of their riches to seek counseling. Obviously, they may need to seek help from secular agencies, as the church does not seem to understand what really happened to them. Many will view their settlement reward as a source of healing, but the money is just a band-aid. Children who are sinned against carry an unspeakable burden for the rest of their lives. No amount of money will heal the hole in their souls.

With the exception of the two comments that I like, most seem to view Long as the victim – and those who were hurt by Long – well, if they hadn’t come forth with exposure, then the sheep could have comfortably worshipped Eddie Long – but now many are spiritual nomads.

…………………………………………….

One commenter stated …”now these young men will be held responsible for the souls lost because of this.” Huh???

OK, so let me get this straight. If they had not exposed Eddie Long for the sexual predator that he is, would all be well in Christendom? More specifically, would all have been well at New Birth – or any church where these monsters are and should be exposed? Silence is the biggest sin Christians will have to answer for.

…………………………………………….

Many victims of rape, incest, domestic violence and abuse take their pain to their graves. And in most cases, who can blame them? Why expose yourself to ridicule and being victimized all over again? Too many people want to hide the ugly side of life, and act like it doesn’t exist. That is the main cause of our churches failing our communities, not these young men who spoke out and sought justice. The Black community especially is guilty of turning a blind eye to sins against the vulnerable, instead of speaking out and protecting those Jesus died for. He died for all mankind, not just the pulpit pimps that are sexually exploiting, and messing up your kids.

…………………………………………….

To the four brave souls that exposed Eddie Long – I commend you. Please get some help with sorting out the confusion within your souls – and pray to God that you do not in turn become the hunter. I cannot tell you what to do with our wealth, but understand that things will not bring you comfort. When you are alone with yourself, you will still face the giants that seek to destroy you. Evil does not leave you alone.

To all of the misguided Christians that defend Long and his pal Creflo – may God open your spiritual eyes to see the truth. You have been blinded by your devotion to your pastors, and you will give an account to God someday. To those who clapped when Creflo insulted the people of God, you will reap what you have sown. Imagine how those hurting sheep felt when you joined your pastor in condemning their actions – shame on all of you. Please read the Bible for yourselves.

…………………………………………….

To the courageous souls that “expose the deeds of darkness,” don’t stop. This is our duty, our God given right and we should clearly understand that we are at war with the forces of evil – wickedness in high places. Jesus already won the battle, but the fight isn’t over yet.

Peace

Why didn’t Jamal just tell Long to stop what he was doing? Because, Jamal says, “you’re afraid to lose your father. You’re afraid that if you tell him ‘No,’ the support that he gives to yourself … the fact that you finally have a father that you always wanted for and always dreamed of, will just walk away from you if you don’t give him what you want. So you end up turning into something you never thought you’d be.”

And: “You have to understand, this man manipulated us from childhood. This was our father and we loved him. This man turned his back on us when he had no more need for us. That’s not a father. That’s a predator. … [Long] is not a man, [he is] a monster.”

“Centino Kemp – Sources say Kemp joined in the settlement talks after he heard about the other young men’s lawsuits and though he never sued, he became a part of the final settlement.

“One source says Centino Kemp, who was raised in the Bahamas, met Bishop Eddie Long years ago during a visit to New Birth while he was a teenage student in a Florida college. The relationship meant enough for him to tattoo Eddie Long’s name on his wrist, followed by the words, “Never a Mistake, Always a Lesson.

SPIRITUAL – BUT NOT RELIGIOUS

By Terry Loving

What does it mean when one claims to be “spiritual – but not religious?”

I get thousands of hits on my web site, http://www.spiritual-side-of-domestic-violence.org, most likely from people searching for “spiritual” – not necessarily “religious” solutions to domestic violence and abuse. The problem with searching for “spirituality” alone, is the danger of embracing beliefs that border on the occult, mysticism, nature worship and the like. Of these things, God condemns – and warns of the penalties for participation in the forbidden.

…………………………………..

It is possible as well that many are not searching for “salvation” as it would seem – but a way to live life on earth in a harmonious manner, while embracing inner peace. People are searching for a relationship with a “Higher Power,” but not necessarily the “God” that Christendom serves. Numerous self-help programs offer the opportunity to acknowledge a “Higher Power” of your choosing, without confessing the one and only True God of Heaven – but as you have come to know Him.

…………………………………..

Given the climate of American churches today, it is understandable that there is a mass exodus from “mainstream religion.” In many cases, people should depart from religious bodies that promote false doctrine, spousal abuse, homosexuality and whatever is contrary to “sound doctrine.” However, too many people depart from God Himself; based on the actions of the “hypocrites” they perceive to be false worshippers of the Almighty, therefore, as the saying goes, they “Throw the baby out with the bath water.” Out go religion, God, Jesus, and anything that appears to be connected with those “crazy” people called “Christians.”

…………………………………..

The Bible speaks of those who are “spiritual” as well as those who are “religious” – or identifying with a “religion.” In our society, many reject the idea of “religion,” especially since it relates to “organized” religion, church attendance, and identifying with a particular group in order to fulfill their “spiritual” needs.

…………………………………..

Of this mindset, there are numerous people who have been hurt by a particular house of worship in some way – emotional or sexual abuse – and they disconnect. On the other hand, we have the spectators. They hear of a church controversy, or read about it in the news and often say, “You see – that’s why I don’t go to church!” No, that is not the reason – you had no interest in the first place, and you were looking for an excuse to fortify your rebellion against God. So there!

…………………………………..

Pulpit Pimps – false preachers of the Gospel are making it very difficult for people to find God. Their desire for greed and power outweighs the salvation of lost souls, and many people can see through the sham, except those that continue to throw money at their feet. This is a classic case of the “blind leading the blind,” and we know a “ditch” awaits them.

…………………………………..

Yet still, is it possible to be a “spiritual” person apart from the Spirit? Is the “Higher Power” as one “comes to know Him” the same as knowing the Creator of life and the world itself? Do the “spiritual – but not religious” have a Savior? A Redeemer – One to seek in times of trouble? Do they have “faith” – if so, in what? Is it dangerous to seek spirituality on your own, making it up as you go along? Are the “spiritual – but not religious” folk just revising the “Burger King” religion – “Have it your way?” Or, are they truly seeking a connection with God, but rejecting mainstream religion?

…………………………………..

“A group of social scientists studied 346 people representing a wide range of religious backgrounds in an attempt to clarify what is implied when individuals describe themselves as “spiritual, but not religious.” Religiousness, they found, was associated with higher levels of interest in church attendance and commitment to orthodox beliefs. Spirituality, in contrast, was associated with higher levels of interest in mysticism, experimentation with unorthodox beliefs and practices, and negative feelings toward both clergy and churches.” 1

…………………………………..

While I am working towards my own conclusions on the matter – which will be posted at a later date – I would be grateful for any feedback presently. Please weigh in, and let me hear from anyone with an opinion concerning, “spiritual – but not religious.”

Thank you!

IS IT A SIN TO DRINK?

By Terry Loving

“The children of alcoholics can break the cycle, many end up loathing alcohol and refusing to let it destroy their lives like it may have done to their parents.”

Anything that is classified as “sin,” can only be supported and defined in God’s Word. Apart from the Bible, what is viewed as “sin” is based on personal perceptions and opinions. Therefore, to rightly answer the question – “Is It a Sin to Drink?” – We must seek God’s view on the matter.

According to man’s definition, “sin” is defined as, 1. “Transgression of divine law: the sin of Adam; 2. “any reprehensible or regrettable action, behavior, lapse, etc.: great fault or offense; to offend against a principle, standard, etc.”1

………………………..

There are no suitable words in the English language to describe the horror of growing up with alcoholism and domestic violence. What I witnessed was “reprehensible” actions and behaviors, but none “regrettable.” There was “great fault” and “offense” towards my mother, my siblings and myself. And there were no “principles” or “standards” in my mother’s house – only chaos, violence, molestation, starvation, neglect, and a host of other evils.

………………………..

Biblically speaking, yes, their drinking amounted to sin. Why? Because the drunks I grew up with were like those in Proverbs 4:17, “For they eat the bread of wickedness And drink the wine of violence,” – NASB

When they drank, they were VIOLENT! All sorts of wickedness came forth from their characters, and they committed acts that were sinful, and totally against the Will of God.  The following scripture describes the violent drunks I grew up with:

………………………..

“Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
Those who linger long over wine,
Those who go to taste mixed wine.
Do not look on the wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup,
When it goes down smoothly;
At last it bites like a serpent
And stings like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things
And your mind will utter perverse things,
And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of
the sea,
Or one who lies down on top of a mast.
They struck me, but I did not become ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it.
When shall I awake?
I will seek another drink.”

(Proverbs 23:29-35)

………………………..

“No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.” (1Timothy 5:23)

This scripture refers to medicinal purposes of wine drinking. More so, this particular wine most likely was not fermented wine, the kind that makes men go mad.

………………………..

As far as Christians, drinking, smoking, fornicating, and any other offense to God – we must strive to eliminate these things from our spiritual walk. Is it easy? Not always. People develop “strongholds” in their lives leftover from worldly living. Sometimes our dark places take time to heal as we turn from sin.We may have concern for our health and the effects of our actions on others, still – it takes time and help from God to change.

We fall time and time again when we try to give up offenses on our own. We cannot rise to holiness without God, and the blood of Christ. We must desire to do so above all else, and allow God to control our lives.

“Some 55% of family violence occurs in alcoholic homes with alcohol a factor in 90% of child abuse cases.”
