“If there was a god, how can his people hurt others?”

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

On a daily basis, I check the “search terms” that people input to reach my site. I make a list of the questions that I plan to address when the Holy Spirit chooses a topic for me to write about. The title of this post is one of those inquiries that beg for an answer.

……………………….

The beginning of the question “If there was a god,” indicates that this person does not believe a real “god” exists. Or, they question this “god” in terms of his ability to manage the universe – especially his own people. The latter part of the question solely places the deeds of “his people” on the shoulders of “god” – “how can his people hurt others?”

……………………….

Another way of looking at this question is:

How can those who profess to be born again into the likeness of Jesus Christ do harm to others? How is it possible that the people of “god” can abuse innocent people – for no reason? If “god” loves, and “his people” belong to him, how in the world can they cause harm to others? This question concludes that there cannot be “a god” who allows “his people” to recklessly injure other people. Therefore, it is quite possible that there is no “god.”

……………………….

As a believer, I know for myself personally that God does exist. Not only do I believe the Bible to be the Word of God, I believe that it contains all that God intended for us to know – pertaining to life and godliness. Within its pages are the keys to life and death – eternally. By faith I believe the Word that guides my life daily to strive to live in peace within myself, and with all mankind. Even when my flesh desires to lash out for a wrong committed against me – the Holy Spirit restrains me – and reminds me of the truth of God’s Word, and His saving grace.

……………………….

True children of God will suffer in this life, but it is not for us to cause suffering – to do so amounts to sin. One of the reasons that “his people” cause harm to others is the fact that they are not truly His people. These are the people who profess outwardly that they belong to God’s spiritual family. However, they “have a form of godliness,” but they are not true believers for they “denied its power” – godliness. In other words, most Christians will look good, smell good, shout good, preach well on Sunday morning, but it is all for show. They are so far removed from godliness that even the Word instructs to:

New International Version (©1984) – “Have nothing to do with them.”

New Living Translation (©2007) – “Stay away from people like that!”

English Standard Version (©2001) – “Avoid such people.”

New American Standard Bible (©1995) – “Avoid such men as these.”

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.) – … “from such turn away.”

International Standard Version (©2008) – “Stay away from such people.”

Bible in Basic English – … “go not with these.”

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

3:1-9 Even in gospel times there would be perilous times; on account of persecution from without, still more on account of corruptions within. Men love to gratify their own lusts, more than to please God and do their duty. When every man is eager for what he can get, and anxious to keep what he has, this makes men dangerous to one another.

……………………….

When men do not fear God, they will not regard man. When children are disobedient to their parents, that makes the times perilous. Men are unholy and without the fear of God, because unthankful for the mercies of God. We abuse God’s gifts, if we make them the food and fuel of our lusts. Times are perilous also, when parents are without natural affection to children.

……………………….

And when men have no rule over their own spirits, but despise that which is good and to be honoured. God is to be loved above all; but a carnal mind, full of enmity against him, prefers any thing before him, especially carnal pleasure. A form of godliness is very different from the power; from such as are found to be hypocrites, real Christians must withdraw.

……………………….

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.

……………………….

Many people mistakenly blame God, or turn away from Him because of the way “his people” conduct themselves. Unholy people do not void the Holiness of God. Hateful and abusive people do not cancel out God’s love and tender mercy.

……………………….

God gave mankind free will. Some may question why He would give man such free reign knowing our attraction to sin. Well, would you want the love of your life to love you by force? If you are forced to love someone, is it really love? Are you really free to love if your love is dictated by another? With free will, we also have the power to choose. Joshua made a choice as the head of his household, for the benefit of all therein:

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
“If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

……………………….

The bottom line is this; please do not turn away from God because of evil people. We have the power to choose to not be in the company of people who do us harm. Or, we can choose to remain in the company of evildoers – blame God – and eventually lose our souls. God gave us the way out of dealing with ungodly hurtful people – “stay away from them.” If we heed this advice coming from our Heavenly Father, we will avoid much harm.

……………………….

Exodus 32:34 Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.”

Romans 2:9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

……………………….

Unbelief and Its Consequences

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
