Bobby Tilman – IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME???

Adrian Tyrone Snow killed at Gamestop Robbery

Why do we say a person was in the “wrong place at the wrong time” when he or she gets killed or hurt in some way?  I believe we use this terminology because we hear others use it, but do we really reflect on its meaning? And how is it determined that a person is considered to be “in the wrong place,” if they are going about normal living? More so, how do we determine the right time instead of the “wrong time” to be in a particular place?

…………………………………………..

Saying that a person was in the “wrong place at the wrong time” sounds to me like they share some responsibility for what happens to them. OK, in some cases that may be true. If you consent to accompany an armed man to a robbery and you get caught – you were definitely in the wrong place – with the wrong person – and doing the wrong thing. As far as timing, should the robbers have entered the bank earlier, later or perhaps another day?

I read an article entitled, “Bobby Tillman: Wrong Place at the Wrong Time Ends Young Life.”1

…………………………………………..

It is a great possibility, barring any other unforeseen tragedy – that Bobby Tilman would still be alive if he had not gone to the party. Was he “wrong” for going? His mother knew he was attending the party, and he sought her approval on his attire before leaving the house. She told him to “be careful” as any caring mother would do. Should he have left the house at an earlier or later time? Was it fate? Who is to say?

…………………………………………..

“Adrian Tyrone Snow, 40, of Stone Mountain, was shot twice as he resisted two robbers trying to tie him up” when he entered a GameStop video game store in Rockdale County, GA.2 Was Mr. Snow at the “wrong place at the wrong time” as well? He went to the store during the commission of an armed robbery (wasn’t aware of it) – should he have gone another day instead? Were Bobby Tilman and Mr. Snow responsible for what happened to them?

…………………………………………..

There are people who are robbed, killed, beaten and raped in their own homes. Are they in the “wrong place at the wrong time” in their own homes? How could that be? More so, how do we determine when it is the right times to go on errands, attend a party, or stay at home?

…………………………………………..

Dictionary.com defines the word “wrong” as: “not in accordance with what is morally right or good: a wrong deed.” “Not correct in action, judgment, opinion, method…in error…” “Not proper or usual; not in accordance with requirements or recommended practice:” 3 Neither Bobby Tilman or Mr. Snow “committed an immoral act;” were “incorrect in action, judgment;” Nor did they do anything “not proper” – one went to a store, and the other went to a party – no more, no less.

…………………………………………..

So how do we determine the right place at the right time? We can’t. Life happens, good and bad things happen to all of us. We go about our daily living and hope and pray to make it back home safely, dwell in safety, and enjoy the freedoms granted to us as American citizens. We live in a fallen and evil world, which someday will end. Evil is trying to win over good, and good has become mute. But Heaven has already won the battle (Revelations 17:14).

…………………………………………..

Until America – especially God’s people – stand up, face evil, and establish that the “wrong place” is bringing evil to our schools, our homes, and our society, wickedness will continue to accumulate human casualties. As far as the “wrong time” there is no right time to experience tragedy and sorrow. But we live in a world full of it every day that we are alive; all the more reason that we need a Savior – The Savior – Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12)

…………………………………………..

“So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous…” (Matthew 13:49)
